"Half Price Tickets - Thursday Only!" - Envision Financial presents Jesse Cahill's Nightcrawlers

jesse_8017
The Night Crawlers are a quintet of Vancouver musicians dedicated to preserving the sound and vibe of the great 1960s Hammond B3 organ bands.  Inspired by the music of Brother Jack McDuff, “The Mighty Burner” Charles Earland, Big John Patton, and Booker T and the MG’s, the Night Crawlers play gritty, soulful, down home music that’s all about having a good time. Lead by critically acclaimed drummer Jesse Cahill the band features a who’s who of the Vancouver Jazz scene with Cory Weeds on alto sax, Steve Kaldestad on tenor sax, Dave Sikula on guitar and Chris Gestrin behind the Hammond organ.

The band’s first CD, Presenting, was nominated for Album of the Year at the National Jazz Awards in 2009 and received 3.5 stars in Downbeat Magazine. Their latest recording, Night Crawlers With Big Band Sound – Down In The Bottom, was released on CD and LP in January 2011 and was recently nominated for a Western Canadian Music Award.  Down in the Bottom has enjoyed much critical acclaim and reached #11 on the JazzWeek Charts in the U.S

With a combination of grit and soul, plus successful collaborations with music legends such as Red Holloway, David “Fathead” Newman and Jim Byrnes, the Night Crawlers have been making fans all across the country. The spectacular sound of the Hammond organ, the power of a nine piece horn section, and the irrepressible drumming of band leader Jesse Cahill never fails to whip audiences into a frenzy.

Here’s what Ken Micallef of Down Beat Magazine had to say about “Presenting”:

“It s hard to make a bad organ trio record, give the associations a whirring Leslie can conjure in our collective jazz perception. But when organ grinder Chris Gestrin mans the Hammond, a great record emerges. Gestrin plays with Vancouver, B.C. s Night Crawlers, exponents of the holy grail of 1960 s organ swing. Recorded live at Vancouver s Cellar Nighclub, the operative word on Presenting is authenticity, from mixing the recorded digital files on 2 – inch tape to sweltering performances of material by Big John Patton, Jack McDuff and Horace Silver. The Night Crawlers play like a decades-old organization, possessing the swagger, muscle and greasy swing feel of yesteryear s great. This live record is practically a time machine.”

Envision Jazz Festival

The Surrey School District proudly presents the Envision Jazz Festival, now in it’s 31st year, as one of Canada’s largest educational festivals. This event combines 2 days of jazz performances by 2000 secondary jazz musicians with 3 nights of superb professional jazz performances for the public.

This year, the Envision Jazz Festival and the Surrey School District will address the issue of hunger in our schools. Hungry children have difficulty concentrating on learning. The Surrey School District’s Meal programs support 3450 children (about 5% of district enrolment) in need at forty-four of the district’s 123 schools by providing a daily lunch or breakfast, but money is not available to feed every child in need.

Please help support the Surrey School District Meals Program by purchasing a special $40.00 donation ticket. $40.00 donation tickets for the evening performances are available through the Bell Centre that include a $25 donation to the Surrey School District Meals Program, as well as a regular admission fee ($15.00).

*** Online ticket sales stop 2 hours before show time. Tickets for this performance are currently available for purchase at the door 2 hours prior to the performance, as well as during regular box office hours (Monday – Friday 8:30am-4:00pm). For further information please call 604-507-6355.
